The Center for Urban and Multicultural Education (CUME) is the research arm of the Indiana University School of Education (SOE) at IUPUI, with
the mission of creating connections of research, practice, and education improvement for city schools and urban communities. CUME primarily encompasses research and evaluation that can lead to improved practices, assessment, leadership, policy, and community engagement for urban schools, where many of the nation's poor children and children from cultural and linguistic minority backgrounds are educated. CUME supports four interrelated research networks, each comprised of faculty and community stakeholders who design research and study issues affecting city schools: School-Community Engagement and Building Civic Capacity;
Educational Leadership and School Transformation;
Diversity/Culture, Learning, and Teaching; and
Performance Assessment of Student Learning.
CUME works with a variety of organizations and agencies in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area conducting research and evaluation. Currently, a variety of projects are occurring with and in Indianapolis Public Schools, including the El Puente Project, the IPS Full Purpose Partnership Evaluation, and the IPS Collaborative Research Mini-grants Project. CUME also is linked with the SOE's Teacher Education Department, Office of Ongoing Professional Development, Assessment Committee, and Student Life and Diversity. These connections create an expansive range of linkages throughout the central Indiana region.
Community Partners include Indianapolis Public Schools, Indiana Urban Schools Association, Choices, Inc., and the Dawn Project.
