The research activities in the DeVault Otologic Research Laboratory currently are directed at defining the benefits that hearing-impaired children derive from cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. A major focus of the research is detailed investigation of factors influencing speech production and spoken language processing in infants and young children that receive a cochlear implant, including age at time of implantation, degree of pre-implant residual hearing, communication method, and learning and memory.
