Hilltop Garden and Nature Center operates as a unit of the Department
of Recreation and Park Administration in the School of HPER. Serving
Indiana University and the Bloomington community since 1948, Hilltop
provides educational and research opportunities that increase understanding,
appreciation, and practice of gardening and horticulture as community-building and health-enhancing activities beneficial and accessible to
all citizens regardless of age or ability. Hilltop believes in and embodies
the HPER mission of providing lifelong opportunities for discovery,
learning, and participation that contribute to healthy lifestyles for
Living Well.
To these ends, Hilltop provides year-round opportunities for student
participation, leadership, and internships, and a series of experiential
classes that train students in garden programming and management. A
non-credit education series offers classes and workshops year-round
in topics related to gardening, horticulture, and natural history. Professional
training workshops and consultations are offered yearly on similar topics.
Other programming includes our summer youth garden program for children
of all ages and teens, therapeutic horticulture programs serving elder
adults and people with disabilities, a community garden program, homeschool programs, preschool programs, and
numerous volunteer opportunities.
