The Institute for Development Strategies (formerly the Economic Development Institute) was established in 1984 by the Research and Graduate Development office and SPEA. It was created to further research, graduate-level education, and scholarly exchange in the area of economic development and public policy and to serve as a focal point for IU's contributions to the economic development field by coordinating faculty research, presentation of seminars, courses offerings, workshops, and sponsoring conferences. One of the key programs managed by the Institute is the Ameritech Fellowship Program. This program supports several regional policy research projects headed by IU faculty members. The projects target major issues related to the new and emerging economics of mature economic regions with emphasis placed on the industrialized Midwest.
