The Institute for Pheromone Research promotes research and graduate education in various aspects of chemical ecology, and particularly in chemical communication. It specializes in identifying mammalian pheromones and understanding chemical communication through the structural elucidation of mammalian pheromones and the molecular mechanisms of their reception at target tissues. The Institute encourages interdisciplinary research in these areas, involving scientists with diverse expertise, ranging from bioanalytical and synthetic chemistry to neurobiology, reproductive physiology and behavioral science. The Institute promotes research contacts with different laboratories at national and international levels. The Institute is a major chemically-oriented unit in this research area. It is well equipped with instrumentation for the analysis of small molecules as well as for proteomics. New computational techniques further enhance the capabilities of data treatment.
