The Department of Psychiatry's basic science research effort is centered at the Institute of Psychiatric Research. The Institute, as an integral part of the department, shares the department's mission to understand and treat the severe neuropsychiatric disorders, with schizophrenia, major affective disorders, dementia, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders being the major examples. The Institute has particular strength in neurochemistry, neurophysiology, genetics, and the behavioral sciences.
