The mission of the Institute for Research in Environmental Science (IRES) is to promote and coordinate research collaboration among environmental scientists at Indiana University Bloomington (IUB). IRES' activities encourage and facilitate communication between scientists affiliated with disparate departments and schools at IUB; support integrative graduate research projects with cross-disciplinary mentorship; provide administrative support for major externally funded research programs in environmental science; and enhance the visibility and competitiveness of environmental science at IUB for research funding agencies, professional organizations, the recruitment of prospective graduate students and faculty.

The collaboration and synergistic effects fostered by IRES' activities strive to increase the level of innovation and productivity of the environmental science community at IUB and extend the level of external support for environmental science research.

IRES is a joint venture of COAS and SPEA and is administered through the Office of the Vice Provost for Research. Co-Directors are Profs. H.P. Schmid (COAS) and R.A. Hites (SPEA).
