The purposes of the office are: 1) to insure compliance with government regulations and guidelines for animal care and use in research and education; 2) to provide for the health and welfare of animals in campus departments; 3) to advise and monitor procedures in research and teaching involving animals; 4) to oversee operations of research animal facilities; and 5) to supervise campus animal care staff and provide technical assistance to research faculty and students.

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(IACUC) is appointed by the Vice President for Research. It's members include at least one member who is not a scientist, an Attending Veterinarian, a community member with no affiliation with the university, an ethicist, a student member, and other representatives of research departments and administrative officials. The committee must review and approve all applications for animal use. They review the proposed experimental procedures to assure that the correct animal model will be used, that the fewest possible number of animals will be used, and to assure that any possibility for pain or distress is either eliminated or addressed with appropriate anesthesia, analgesia, or tranquilizers, and that all procedures are in compliance with the guidelines set forth in the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Animals as well as the U.S.D.A. "Animal Welfare Act."
