PIRT was established in 1986 as an interdisciplinary center for faculty and students interested in population studies. The Institute's primary function is to promote and support the study of demography at IU. To that end, PIRT provides training courses in population analysis and demographic methods, facilities and personnel for funded research projects, and assistance to faculty and students who are seeking information, data, or funding opportunities in population research. The Institute's goals are to be a resource for faculty and student research in demography; to facilitate access to domestic and international sources of information on population; to develop close contacts with leading university and non-university population centers in the U.S. and abroad; to promote scholarly exchange between IU and U.S. and foreign scholars; to identify sources of external funding in population studies and inform IU faculty and students of these opportunities; and to offer expertise on population questions to the broader university community, the state of Indiana, and national and international agencies.
