The Transportation Research Center (TRC) has been conducting highway
traffic safety research under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department
of Transportation
since 1970. The TRC is one of many different organizations involved
in the ongoing collection and dissemination of highway traffic accident
data from real world crashes. This information is used by the general
public, highway safety community, universities, vehicle manufacturers
and the Federal Government to identify traffic crash trends, highlight
new highway safety issues, improve the crashworthiness of vehicles sold
in the United States and continually develop and refine Federal Motor
Vehicle Safety Standards. TRC's role within this overall mission is
to research and publish information from special crash investigations
and to review the quality and accuracy of information collected under
the following data collection systems managed by the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration: Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS),
General Estimates System (GES), Crashworthiness Data System (CDS) and
Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN).
The following web site describes the data collection systems in more
detail and provides access to the Special Crash Investigation (SCI)
reports completed by TRC,

Example website query: Those interested in investigating the crashworthiness
of the vehicle they drive can look at pictures of how similar cars perform
in real world crashes as well as the type and severity of injuries to
the occupants,
