Indiana University

Objective:

To foster new collaborative research and creative activities involving faculty members and IU centers, institutes, and museums. Funds may be used to support IUB tenured or tenure-track faculty members and research scientists/scholars to work full-time on specific collaborative research or creative activities with IU’s centers, institutes, or museums during the summer. Such support may be in the form of
  • stipends for faculty members themselves or stipends for research assistants who will help to advance the faculty members’ work.
  • support for graduate students’ research or creative activities or to support the general development, expansion, or enhancement of the center, institute, or museum’s research or creative activity.
Collaborations may be initiated either by
  • units, or by
  • individual faculty members.
That is, center, institute, and museum directors are encouraged to invite faculty members to participate in collaborative research or creative activity in their center, institute, or museum. Likewise, individual faculty members are encouraged to identify a center, institute, or museum for collaboration. In either case, the faculty member and unit director should communicate clearly with each other before submitting a proposal.

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of merit. Proposals for faculty stipends and stipends for research assistants who will work with specific faculty members should be submitted by the individual faculty members involved. Proposals to support student research/creative activity or general development, expansion, or enhancement of research/creative activity should be submitted by center, institute, or museum directors on behalf of their units.

Award Amount:

Awards may not exceed $10,007, including fringe benefits.

Award Dates:

May 1, 2010 - April 30, 2011
Budgets should be for one-time amounts to be expended over 12 months.

Application Deadline:

January 20, 2010 5:00 p.m. EST

Eligibility:

  • Individual applicants must be Bloomington tenured or tenure-track faculty members (including librarians) or research scientists/scholars. Non-tenure-track faculty members whose evaluation criteria for promotion include research or creative activity are also eligible with an explanation in the letter of support from their dean or chair.
  • While applicants must be from the Bloomington Campus, the research or creative activity may be focused on collaboration with a research center, institute, or museum on ANY IU campus.
  • Faculty applicants who are seeking support for themselves must have a 10-month appointment. Faculty members on 12-month appointments may not request support for themselves but may apply for support for research assistants. Likewise, directors with 12-month appointments may apply on behalf of their units but may not request support for themselves.

Stipend Conditions:

Summer stipend recipients can devote up to nine weeks of full-time research or creative activity in collaboration with an IU center, institute, or museum. Normally, teaching and/or administrative duties are not permitted during the award period. This restriction does not apply to faculty members on 12-month appointments who have received awards to support research assistants or to directors who have received awards on behalf of their units.

Summer stipend recipients are encouraged to seek additional funding sources to supplement the summer award. Note that total summer compensation (including the stipend) is normally limited to 27.5% of the previous academic year salary (AYS). External funding, if available, should be used first. The award (not to exceed $10,007) may then be used to bring the total to 27.5% AYS.

Budget:

Requests for summer faculty stipends, research assistants, or student research/creative activity require justification for the collaborative effort and the requirements of each person in return for the stipend. If general development, expansion, or enhancement of the scholarly activity in the center, institute, or museum is being requested, the budget justification must also outline the need for such items.

Application Requirements:

Applicants must complete an electronic application, create a budget using the budget builder link on the electronic application form and attach the following as PDFs to the electronic application form. Please note page limitations.
  • 3-4 page Project Description that must provide specific information on the collaborative nature of the project with an IU center, institute, or museum and the anticipated outcomes.
  • 1 page Budget Justification
  • 2-3 page Curriculum Vitae of the Faculty applicant (in the case of individual faculty applicants) or the center, institute, or museum Director (in the case of directors applying on behalf of their units)

  • Brief letter of support from the center, institute, or museum director (in the case of individual faculty applicants)
  • Brief letter of support from a knowledgeable colleague, outside of the center, institute, or museum (in the case of directors applying on behalf of their units)
PDFs are preferred to ensure that application formatting is not lost. Applicants or recommenders can also submit letters of support separately to Donna Carter via email or fax.

Application Materials:

Recommendations should address the applicant’s general scholarly competence, recent performance, and promise of distinction in his or her field of interest; the originality and value of the collaboration, and; the applicant's ability to complete the described project successfully in the time schedule presented.
